New 52 Third Wave Pitch: Prometheus

Over the next few weeks, I am going to try and post a few proposals for DC's eventual New 52: Third Wave. Mostly, they are the dream comics I would like to see, but have very little chance of actually happening. This week: Jack Kirby's Fourth World!

Tagline: The ultimate villain is back! Created by Grant Morrison, this "Batman of Crime" once single-handedly defeated the most powerful roster the Justice League ever mustered.  Now, he's back and better than ever! With a contingency plan for every situation and a strategy for killing any heroes that get in his way, Prometheus is prepared to take the New 52 by storm.

Pitch: OK, I realize that DC already has a book starring one villainous bad-ass but, in the right hands, an ongoing comic starring Prometheus could be a best seller. As I see it, in the first issue, he could do something big and brash to get the DCnU's attention and the following issues would deal with him eluding the ongoing manhunt and working toward some goal that only he knows about.  The guest-starring possibilities are endless! Prometheus is a killer, so a good writer could come up with a mixture of goofy and threatening cannon fodder to fill the gaps between encounters with Batman, Superman and StormWatch.

Potential Writers: Once again, I am forced to lead off with a name that seems to crop up on all of these pitches: Grant Morrison.  Why, yes, I am a Morrison fanboy! How can you tell? But in all seriousness, he created the character and no one that has ever tried to write Prometheus has successfully captured how cool he can be. However, I am not sure Morrison is looking to add to his plate right now.  I think the other writer currently at DC that could possibly capture the essence of Prometheus is Gail Simone. The New 52 hasn't been smooth sailing for her. She was taken off Firestorm and Batgirl has been mostly panned, but allow me to remind you of two words: Secret Six. Very few people have been able to write compelling and sympathetic villains and she is one of them. Her work usually contains an element of quirk to it that would fit the character well. Another couple of exciting names that would be fun attached to a Prometheus ongoing title are Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis who have both had their share of comic book success. Bringing in either of them would add superstar names to the Relaunch's stable, but I am not sure if either creator wants to work for DC right now. Both creators have shown that they can mix dark humor and good writing effectively in the superhero genre.

Potential Artists: My first thought is Howard Porter.  He was the main artist on Morrison's JLA run that introduced Prometheus. It would add a sense of continuity from the characters initial appearances. Plus, the book he is currently working, DC Universe Online Legends, is coming to an end.  Oscar Jimenez was another artist that did some work on Morrison's run that I would like to see more of.  He didn't do any of the Prometheus issues, but his art would work well with a high concept book starring a villain.

Main Character:

Prometheus- He's the anti-Batman, literally.  His parents were small time crooks that were gunned down in front of him by police. Dedicating his life to injustice, he became the ultimate non-powered villain.  Prometheus has a strategy for killing every superhero that he might run into.  His helmet is a high-tech repository of superhero butt kicking information.

Setting:

The Crooked House- Prometheus' base of operations located in the Phantom Zone.
