Last Resort 1.03 - "Eight Bells"

If you've been listening to the podcast, you know that I've been pretty excited about Last Resort since the spring, and that I really enjoyed the pilot almost a month ago when I watched it online.  There's a US Navy nuclear sub.  It's ordered to fire a nuclear strike on the Pakistan, but the method of transmission of the order is a little wonky.  When they attempt to verify the order, another US sub attempts to destroy them.  The same sub later launches the nuclear strike meant for our protagonists.  The pilot ends with Captain Chaplin commandeering a remote island outpost and launching a nuclear warhead towards the US to warn them that he will not allow this crazy event to be swept under the rug.

The second episode was a bit of a step back.  The US Navy sets up a blockade around the island.  Russia sends a special forces squad to try to capture a state-of-the-art US sub, but they're defeated by the crew of the Colorado.  The COB (the top enlisted sailor on a submarine) is locked up after mounting a campaign to undermine Chaplin.

"Bells" is chiefly concerned with the crews' interactions with Serrat, the local crime lord who is nervous about the sudden shift in power on the island.  He's kidnapped three sailors, and the female captive ends up trading sexual favors (off-screen) with Serrat to keep him from killing the others.  Her sacrifice is ultimately in vain, as Serrat kills one of the three when Chaplin is late in getting Serrat what he wants (in this case, the procurement of some unknown cargo from outside the blockade).  These events lead Chaplin to free the COB in exchange for a pledge of "loyalty" until the Chaplin's eventual court martial.

This episode was definitely an improvement over last week for me.  The fact that the writers were willing to have Chaplin fail (in addition to the previously mentioned sexual violence) show that they're interested in neat, tidy conclusions to weekly problems.  Last Resort isn't a cable drama, but it's creator is most famous for his work on cable, and it looks like he wants to bring as much of that flavor to this world as he's allowed to.  I've always been a fan of sub movies, and I really like Andre Braugher, so I'm hopeful that this is the beginning of a major uptick in the quality and drama of Last Resort.

Supernatural 8.02 - "What's Up Tiger Mommy?"

Season 8 opens with another great leap forward.  Dean is getting out of Purgatory, and apparently Sam had a "normal" life while Dean was gone.  He quit hunting, and found a nice veterinarian girl to make a life with.  No word yet on why he was willing to leave her at the drop of a hat when Dean came calling.

So Winchesters went looking for Kevin, the prophet.  He escaped from the demons, and he's found a way to destroy them all, forever.  The search for this final solution sets up the central thrust of the season.  That, and the revelation that Dean left Castiel in Purgatory, and teamed up with a vampire named Benny to get out.

Last night's episode starts with Kevin wanting to check in on his mom.  She's being watched by demons, but the brothers rescue her and convince Kevin to take them to the demon nuke.  Somehow the Roman god Pluto has gotten his hands on it, and it's being sold at a mystical auction (also on the docket: Mjolnir).  Crowley shows up. Mom bids her soul for the tablet. Pluto and Crowley double-cross everyone.  Kevin and his mom run away because he can't help the brothers now that they don't have the tablet.

This was a classic episode of Supernatural.  Great interactions between the brothers.  Great appearance by Crowley.  We get to meet another faction of angels.  Basically, if you've stayed on the Supernatural train up till now, it looks like Season 8 is going to hold up to the show's track record.  If you've never watched before, you'll be so lost after 150 episodes that it would be hopeless to start now.  Try Netflix.

Arrow 1.01 - "Pilot"

When Arrow was first announced, I was skeptical.  I got on the Smallville train at the first stop, and I enjoyed it for awhile, but by the first few episodes of the 3rd season I just drifted away.  Tom Welling was a pretty terrible anchor for a television show, and the cheese factor was just too high.  It would be easy to assume that Arrow would just be more of the same.

It's not.  There's a little Batman Begins in there.  There's definitely some modern Robin Hood.  There's also a leading man that can hold your attention for more than a few seconds without making you think of soap operas.

Oliver Queen was in his early 20s, the son of a major industrialist, and a bit of a celebutante (is there a male version of that word?).  Then he, his father, and his girlfriend's sister are lost at sea and presumed dead.  The sister really did die, but father and son made it to a raft.  Then dad killed himself and Nameless Bodyguard Type so that Oliver would have the supplies to himself and have a better chance at survival.

The pilot opens with Oliver being rescued from the (deserted?) island where he's lived for the last 5 years.  He's an ace with a bow.  He knows all of the martial arts (and Russian?).  He makes his way home to find his mom married to his dad's former partner, his sister is now a small, female version of his former self, and his ex-girlfriend is really, really angry at him for sleeping with her sister, and then getting her killed.

The pilot of Arrow is great.  The flashbacks to the island are interesting, and will (I assume) continue for the entire season, if not the length of the series.  His Batcave is suitably believable in its setting, and not extravagant enough to take you out of the world.  Comic fans will be excited about the idea of (Dinah) Laurel Lance and Tommy Merlyn possibly suiting up down the line.  My only small gripe is the voice-over   I'm not opposed to voice-over in it's entirety, but it was a bit self-important.  If they tone it down in future episodes, I think it could be  a acceptable piece of the formula.

Arrow is violent, and I'm pretty sure our titular hero has already killed people, so be prepared for that coming in.  If you're into comics, or intrigued by super heroes because of the recent explosion of comics movies at the cinema, give the show a shot.  It's off to a pretty good start, and I could see it running almost as long as Smallville did, with much better results. :)

Revolution 1.04 - "The Plague Dogs" (and the season so far)

So, I haven't been very active on the blog recently.  I had a crazy summer, don't really need to get into it here.  The point is, I need to get back on the horse, so I've decided to start posting on the genre shows I'm watching.  I know I should have started at the beginning with these new shows, but I didn't, so let's just move on :)

I was pretty excited about Revolution during Pilot Season.  It's from J.J. Abrams, Eric Kripke and Jon Favreau, so it has a pretty good pedigree.  Unfortunately, the pilot was a bit of a dud.  The characters weren't terribly compelling.  The world is too...clean? Worst of all, the "bad guys" are continually described as being very, very bad, but we haven't actually seen them do anything all that awful. Let's just say I was worried after that first episode.

The show has made slight strides in each episode since, but the strides are very slight.  "Pilot" introduces us to Charlie, Google Man and Dr. British. (I'll be referring to characters by nickname until the show actually makes me remember their actual names).  This trio has to go find Charlie's uncle because her brother, Asthma Boy has been kidnapped by the Bad Guy from Monroe's Militia.  They meet up with Uncle Solo in Chicago and convince him to join the quest.  The tease at the end of the episode shows us that there are Magical USB Pendants, and they somehow allow electricity to exist.

"Chained Heat" is about Uncle Solo going off alone (*snicker*) to find his friend Ms. Bomb, but Charlie is far too plucky to let that happen.  They find Ms. Bomb in the custody of the militia, so they kill a bunch of militia dudes to free her.  Asthma Boy sees the militia kill a dude for having a gun and an American flag, and the lady with the Magical USB Pendant is attacked by Cattleprod Man, who has his own Pendant.  Also, Charlie's mom isn't dead, she's Monroe (of the Militia)'s prisoner.  Oh, right, Monroe and Uncle Solo used to be best buds.  I forgot to mention that.

"No Quarter" is pretty much all about Ms. Bomb taking Uncle Solo and Charlie back to her friends in the anti-Militia Rebellion.  They're under siege in a diner for most of the episode.  They eventually escape.  Back in the B Plot, we find out that Charlie's Dead Dad gave Google Man his Magical USB Pendant, and told him to go find some lady who could tell him about it.  Unfortunately for him, she's the one who ran afoul of Cattleprod Man last week.  They find her computer, and suddenly their Pendant makes her CD player and Dr. British's iPhone work, but only for about 3 minutes.  In the C Plot, Asthma Boy proves that he's not the Annoying Whining Teenager I thought he was going to be from the first two episodes.

Finally, we get to "The Plague Dogs".  The Quintet meets back up.  They run into Bad Boy again (he's a young Militia dude who keeps following Charlie around), and they take him prisoner.  Dogs attack, and Google gets chewed on.  The dogs' owner shows up, stabs Dr. British in the leg, and is eventually killed (I think?).  Dr. British bleeds out, and I'm guessing Bad Boy is inducted into the Quintet because they like the name too much to drop it.  Asthma Boy escapes the Militia during a MegaTwister, but he's tricked by Bad Guy into saving him from a collapsing roof, and ultimately recaptured.  Boring Mom has a plot, too, but nothing happens.

So, we're a month in.  Next week we get a train caper, those are always fun. The show continues to grow on me, incrementally.  Uncle Solo is ok at times. Google is pretty good, even though he hasn't been given much to do so far.  Dr. British is dead, and I'm fine with that, because she wasn't doing anything for me.  Asthma Boy is much, much less worthless than I thought he was going to be, and might even have a chance to be good eventually.  I continue to have three main problems.  First, Charlie's main purpose in the show so far seems to be her ability to make her eyes really big.  She's boring, but she's the main character, so she sucks up a lot of the energy (*snicker*) in the room.  Second, the world's only real problem seems to be in the landscape management department.  Everyone is super clean, and most people we've met seem to be living a pretty good life.  This is coupled with my third problem, the weak villains.  I've seen the Militia kill one guy with unlawful firearms who shot at them, and another accidentally when trying to take down Asthma Boy and his crossbow.  They also had the chain gang dragging the helicopter.  I'm not saying I want to elect Monroe to office, but he's not looking all that bad compared to some of the real tyrants we've seen in our history.  If the show wants me to root for this Rebellion, they need to make me hate the Militia.  That's not happening right now.

What did you think?  Am I way off base?  Is Charlie your new favorite character?  Am I a terrible person for not hating the Militia?  Let me know in the comments.

P.S. Maybe if we're lucky Trey will design a cool banner for my Revolution posts... :)

Game of Thrones News: Liam Cunningham is Davos Seaworth

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Davos Seaworth
Art by Amok
Davos was a successful smuggler who came to the aid of Stannis Baratheon during Robert's Rebellion. Stannis was under siege at Storm's End for the duration of the war, and just as the castle ran out of food Davos beat the blockade with a shipload of onions and salted fish. Stannis knighted Davos for his service, but had the tips of his fingers cut off for smuggling.  Davos has been in Stannis' service ever since, and is commonly known as the Onion Knight. He is easily Stannis' most loyal retainer.

Liam Cunningham
Liam is from Dublin, but was actually an electrician in Zimbabwe for a few years before moving back to Ireland, getting bored with his job, and giving acting a try.  In the mid-90s he was in A Little Princess and First Knight.  More recently he played Mad Dog Maguire in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Brick in Centurion, and Solon in Clash of the Titans.  This year he played Richard Tate in the BBC's Outcasts and Colfur in Starz's Camelot.  He's also won two "Irish Oscars" for his work in Hunger and The Wind That Shakes The Barley.  This guy has a great look, and he seems to be really well respected in the Irish acting community.  I'm totally on board, even though his name isn't Robert Carlyle.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne Tarth

Game of Thrones News: Carice van Houten is Melisandre

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Melisandre
Art by Amok
Mel is a Red Priestess of R'hllor from Asshai, a land in the far, far, far east of the GoT world.  She claims to receive prophetic visions from her fire god, and travels to Westeros to serve King Stannis Baratheon, who she has seen in her visions.  Mel is the second of the major new characters for S2, and will quickly become one of King Stannis' most trusted advisors.  She is described as "beautiful, with a slender figure, full breasts, and a heart-shaped face. He hair is burnished copper, her eyes are fed, and her skin is pale. She always wears red." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Carice van Houten
Well, we didn't get Christina Hendricks, but she's got a pretty good thing going with Mad Men.  I haven't seen Carice act yet, but this casting has moved Black Death up to the top of my viewing queue.  Carice is Dutch, and has won four "Dutch Oscars".  She came to the attention of American viewers as the lead in Black Book.  That led to a role in Valkyrie with Tom Cruise, and Repo Men with Jude Law and Forest Whitaker.  She also has the horror film Intruders coming out this October.  She's the right age, and I think she has the right look.  I like that she's not British, and I hope they let her use her native accent to lend a sense of "other" to her performance. As far as I'm concerned, HBO has done well for themselves yet again.

Game of Thrones News: Stephen Dillane is Stannis Baratheon

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Stannis Baratheon
Art by Amok
Stannis is the second of three Baratheon brothers, younger than Robert and older than Renly. For those that believe Robert & Cersei's "children" are illegitimate, Stannis has the best claim to the throne following Robert's death.  Stannis has been the Lord of Dragonstone since the Rebellion, and has served for many years as the Master of Ships for the realm.  He will probably show up in the opening scene of Season 2, as he is the biggest new player in the game of thrones.  He is described as "broad-shouldered and sinewy with leathery skin and a pinched, narrow face. He has only a fringe of black hair remaining around his head and a close-copped beard covering a square jaw. He has dark blue eyes." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Stephen Dillane
OK, Stannis' face will never, ever wear this expression. Other than that, doesn't this guy look pretty much perfect? Dillane is actually a few years older than Mark Addy, but that's not a huge deal, the character has always seemed like the kind of guy who's been 75 on the inside since the day he was born.  If you don't recognize him, go get HBO's John Adams. He played Thomas Jefferson, he was awesome, and he was nominated for an Emmy.  He was Horatio in the Mel Gibson Hamlet.  He played Merlin in the Clive Owen version of King Arthur.  He also won a Tony Award for his work in The Real Thing.  It would have been awesome to get someone like Christopher Eccleston or Mark Strong to play Stannis, but that was never going to happen.  I'm very, very excited about this casting, and if he can be half as good as he was the last time he worked for HBO, we're in for a real treat.

Game of Thrones News: Gwendoline Christie is Brienne Tarth

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Brienne Tarth
Art by Amok
Brienne is the daughter (and only surviving child) of Selwyn Tarth, the Lord of Evenfall, an island off the coast of the Stormlands.  She is a female warrior, a rare thing in Westeros, especially outside the North, and pledges her sword to the cause of the newly crowned King Renly Baratheon at the very beginning of the second book.  She is as tall or taller than most men, and is considered quite unattractive.  She is described as having "large, blue eyes, straw-colored hair, broad, coarse features, and a flat face. Her teeth are prominent and crooked, her mouth is too wide, her lips are swollen, her nose is battered and has been broken more than once, and her face is covered in freckles. She is tall and ungainly, thick for a woman." (from Tower of the Hand)

Gwendoline Christie
The guys at WiC were dead-on with this one, good for them, I was way too scared to even try to pick a Brienne. It's tricky because I don't know a ton of British actresses who are close to or taller than six feet, and the ones I do know about look like super models, often because that's how they got their start.  Brienne can't be played by a super-model.

I like this choice. Gwen isn't ugly, but I can see how they can give her a bad haircut, some false teeth, and a nose prosthetic, and she's Brienne.  It doesn't hurt that GRRM said she basically had the part the minute she walked in the room. His enthusiasm always gives me confidence.  From looking at IMDB, the only way you've ever seen Gwen is in a small scene in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, or if you frequent British playhouses.  I'm sure some of our British brethren will dig up some new photos of her and get them on the web in the next nine months, but for now the pickings are slim. Oh, did I mention she's 6'3"? :)

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Xaro Xhoan Daxos

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

If you've read the series, you know that means we'll be seeing a host of new characters, in addition to the favorites who managed to survive season 1. I've always been a huge fan of casting speculation, so I'm channeling my excitement for season 2 into a series of posts where I cast the major roles. And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Xaro Xhoan Daxos

No picture of this character, couldn't find a good one anywhere on the web.  Xaro is a new character Daenerys meets in A Clash of Kings.  He is a merchant from Qarth, whose people are called "Milk Men" by the Dothraki.  This is because the the Qartheen are very tall and very pale.  He is described as "bald with a jewel in his nose." - (from Tower of the Hand)

--------

Paul Bettany
This will probably be one of my most controversial picks, but I'm ok with that.  Paul Bettany is a great actor, and has worked strictly in movies for the last decade.  Unfortunately, none of his starring roles have been very successful to date.  He is probably best known as Silas from The Da Vinci Code, Dr. Maturin in Master and Commander, or Charles from A Beautiful Mind.  My favorite role of his is probably Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight's Tale.  He has recently starred in Creation, Legion, and Priest

I know some people will say he's much too famous to play a relatively minor part on a television show.  First, it's not TV, it's HBO.  Second, he doesn't seem to have any parts lined up currently, so there's nothing professionally keeping him from Ireland.  Third, he's worked with Mark Addy, so he has a personal connection who could tell him what a blast the first season was.  Finally, it couldn't hurt his image right now.  As I said, his starring roles haven't gone over well, and GoT is a dynamo right now.  This is the kind of fan base that will follow him to future roles simply because he was a part of "their show".  Bettany could put in a month in Ireland, have a blast, and be part of something really groundbreaking in television history.

--------

NEXT TIME:  Not sure who I'll go with next.  I keep hoping they'll announce an actress for Brienne, but maybe if they haven't by next week I'll break down and pick the Maid of Tarth.

Game of Thrones News: Natalie Dormer is Margaery Tyrell

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Margaery Tyrell
Art by Amok
Margaery is the only daughter of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden and the Reach. She is slightly younger than her brother Loras, the Knight of Flowers. The Tyrells are the second wealthiest family in Westeros, behind only the Lannisters.  As the only daughter, Margaery's access to that fortune will make her an enticing pawn as the game of thrones gains steam. Margaery is described as "doe-eyed and pretty with long, curly brown hair." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Natalie Dormer
Best known for her role as Anne Boleyn in Showtime's The Tudors, Natalie is originally from Reading, England. She just turned 29, which is definitely older than the 17yo Margaery of the books.  However, remember that many of the characters have been aged up for television.  Jon Snow is supposed to be 15 at the start of the novels, whereas on the show he seems to be at least 18.  That kind of aging doesn't get Margaery to 29, but I think it will be fine.  Natalie also played the role of Victoria in Casanova with Heath Ledger, and has a part in this summer's Captain America.

As for my pick, I had the right show, but the wrong actress.  I wanted to go with Sarah Bolger, who played Princess Mary on The Tudors.  She's a little closer to the correct age, and I felt like she would be a bit less recognizable from her previous role, but I'm still very happy with the actual hire.  Natalie did a good job playing one type of royal woman, and it will be interesting to get to see her try a different take in Westeros.

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Qhorin Halfhand

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Qhorin Halfhand
Art by Amok
Qhorin is a member of the Night's Watch. He lives at the Shadow Tower, one of the other two operational Watch castles, and is the lead ranger of the Shadow Tower's contingent sent to join Commander Mormont's expedition beyond the Wall.  The name Halfhand comes from a previous ranging, where a wildling's axe severed all the fingers on his right hand, save his forefinger and thumb.  He is described as "tall and clean-shaven with a long braid. He has gray eyes." - (from Tower of the Hand)

James Purefoy
Purefoy has to be on GoT at some point.  He's British.  He's worked on HBO.  He's familiar to American audiences, but not a movie star.  He worked on British TV recently, but doesn't have anything lined up now that his most recent movie has finished filming.  You probably recognize him as Mark Anthony on Rome.  He also played the Black Prince in A Knight's Tale (with Mark Addy).  He was King Lot in the GoT-competitor Camelot's first season, and he recently finished shooting a major part in the forthcoming big-budget epic John Cater of Mars.  He's the right age to play Qhorin, and I think he can play a great cold-worn, courageous ranger of the Night's Watch.

--------

NEXT TIME:  I know I keep promising Xaro Xhoan Daxos, but I've been doing a re-read in preparation of A Dance With Dragons and I keep finding big characters that I forgot come into the picture in book 2.  Maybe we'll go with XXD next week.

Jaqen H'ghar

Jaqen is a convicted felon, and by the end of the first season of Game of Thrones he's already been turned over to Yoren to serve in the Night's Watch.  We just haven't met him yet. To recap, Yoren came to King's Landing at about the halfway point of the season and was the first to tell Ned Stark about his wife's capture of Tyrion Lannister. Yoren wasn't in town to deliver mail, he was there to get men for the Night's Watch, and Jaqen is one of his more...interesting acquisitions. He is originally from Lorath, one of the Free Cities, and is described as "slender and fine-featured. Half of his hair is red and the other half is white." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Michael Sheen
Michael Sheen is a 42 year old Welsh actor who has only recently entered the consciousness of American audiences.  His first major role was Lucian in Underworld (and its sequels). He then played Prime Minister Tony Blair in The Queen, and journalist David Frost in Frost/Nixon.  He entered the Twilight Saga as the vampire Aro in New Moon, voiced the White Rabbit in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and played Castor in Tron: Legacy.

While some will say that he's too big of a name to appear on TV, I'm not so sure. He has yet to have a starring movie role, so I don't think he's really a "movie star".  From looking at IMDB and Wikipedia, he doesn't seem to have any confirmed roles coming up.  Besides, shooting a season of an HBO show is pretty close to shooting a movie in terms of the time commitment, especially if you're not one of the handful of really central characters.  As for his ability to play Jaqen, readers of the book series should note the varied roles he has played in his relatively short term on screen.

NEXT TIME:  In doing some research for these blog posts, I realized that I hadn't even thought about casting any of the new Night's Watch recruits for S2, so I had to give it a go.  Xaro Xhoan Daxos has, sadly, been bumped to next week.

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Ygritte

Ygritte
Art by Amok
Ygritte is one of the first wildlings Jon Snow encounters in his travels north of The Wall.  The character is definitely a fan favorite, and she has one of the best-loved catchphrases from the books, "You know nothing, Jon Snow."  I don't want to get into much more character description to avoid major spoilers.  She is described as "short and bandy-legged with a round face, small hands, a pug nose, with shaggy bright red hair. Her teeth are crooked." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Lily Cole
Lily Cole started as a model, but moved into acting in 2007 with the film St. Trinian's.  In 2009 she played the female lead in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.  She recently appeared in an episode of Doctor Who, and has two films in post-production: There Be Dragons, set during the Spanish Civil War, and The Moth Diaries.  She's from England, so she shouldn't have a problem getting cast.  She just turned 23, so she's in the perfect range compared to the aging-up of the other young characters.  She's 5'10, which is definitely not "short", but I personally don't think Ygritte's height is a central character trait.  My bet is the biggest fan objection to this casting would be "she's too pretty".  First of all, I don't think the books ever say she's ugly.  She's just a wildling, so she doesn't brush her hair or wear make-up.  I feel like Lily has the kind of face that the GoT makeup artists could make virtually unrecognizable.  And can't you just see her saying "You know nothing Jon Snow" the second after this photo was snapped?

NEXT TIME:  I keep thinking we're going to have real casting news, and I keep getting disappointed.  Right now, I've got a pretty good idea for Xaro Xhoan Daxos rumbling around in my brain, so I'll say that will be next week's post.

Location Scouting Game of Thrones - Season 2: The Iron Islands

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

If you've read the series, you know that means we'll be seeing a host of new locations, places that may have been mentioned in the first season, but we haven't visited yet. I don't live in Europe, so I can't find these places myself, but other fans do. In this series of posts I'll talk about places in Westeros we'll visit in Season 2, and try to highlight some of the real-life places they may use to bring them to life.

--------

The Iron Islands

The Iron Islands are a rocky outcropping of islands just northwest of the Riverlands, off the west coast of Westeros.  They're too harsh for much agriculture, so to survive you either fish, or you take other people's food.  The inhabitants of the Iron Islands, the ironborn, are largely descended from the First Men, and are the Westerosi equivalent of Vikings, with a little pirate thrown in for good measure.  It's cold, and windy, and the waves are always crashing in from every direction.

--------

Ballintoy

It looks like we might have our first new shooting location.  Yesterday, a story from the Balmoney Times began circulation among the fan community about Game of Thrones negotiating a deal to shoot some scenes near Ballintoy, in Northern Ireland.  There's a Harbour, so it could be the sight for Dragonstone, or somewhere in the Free Cities, but my money is on the Iron Islands.  Let me show you why.
from the Wyvernwood Flickr

First, there's this picture.  That just looks like the Iron Islands to me.  Obviously that outcropping isn't enough for a set, but I'm betting there are some bigger ones nearby.  Or, lacking that, they could just go digital.  Those rocks just have a great feel.

Next, we have the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
from the Stuart Yeates Flickr
If you've read the books, you know that the castle Pyke has several pieces on several different rocky outcroppings, and they're connected by swinging bridges.  Why build one of those when you can find one pre-built?

Then we have Dunseverick Castle

Obviously more of a ruin than an actual castle these days, this is still a gorgeous location, and could make for some really iconic shots with a bit of digital trickery.

Finally, there's the Giant's Causeway

This is apparently one of the top tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, so I'm sure it's a very familiar sight to many Europeans.  For those of us across the pond, it's an awesome alien landscape.  If the crew is already going to be in nearby Ballintoy, it would be a shame to not put this great visual to use somehow in our show.

I could be completely off, and you have to remember that the story only specifically mentions the use of the Harbour, but once I did a little research I felt like there was a treasure trove of great locations in the vicinity.
