Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Xaro Xhoan Daxos

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

If you've read the series, you know that means we'll be seeing a host of new characters, in addition to the favorites who managed to survive season 1. I've always been a huge fan of casting speculation, so I'm channeling my excitement for season 2 into a series of posts where I cast the major roles. And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Xaro Xhoan Daxos

No picture of this character, couldn't find a good one anywhere on the web.  Xaro is a new character Daenerys meets in A Clash of Kings.  He is a merchant from Qarth, whose people are called "Milk Men" by the Dothraki.  This is because the the Qartheen are very tall and very pale.  He is described as "bald with a jewel in his nose." - (from Tower of the Hand)

--------

Paul Bettany
This will probably be one of my most controversial picks, but I'm ok with that.  Paul Bettany is a great actor, and has worked strictly in movies for the last decade.  Unfortunately, none of his starring roles have been very successful to date.  He is probably best known as Silas from The Da Vinci Code, Dr. Maturin in Master and Commander, or Charles from A Beautiful Mind.  My favorite role of his is probably Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight's Tale.  He has recently starred in Creation, Legion, and Priest

I know some people will say he's much too famous to play a relatively minor part on a television show.  First, it's not TV, it's HBO.  Second, he doesn't seem to have any parts lined up currently, so there's nothing professionally keeping him from Ireland.  Third, he's worked with Mark Addy, so he has a personal connection who could tell him what a blast the first season was.  Finally, it couldn't hurt his image right now.  As I said, his starring roles haven't gone over well, and GoT is a dynamo right now.  This is the kind of fan base that will follow him to future roles simply because he was a part of "their show".  Bettany could put in a month in Ireland, have a blast, and be part of something really groundbreaking in television history.

--------

NEXT TIME:  Not sure who I'll go with next.  I keep hoping they'll announce an actress for Brienne, but maybe if they haven't by next week I'll break down and pick the Maid of Tarth.

Game of Thrones News: Natalie Dormer is Margaery Tyrell

Casting announcements for Season 2 of Game of Thrones are finally here!  These are the actual people HBO has hired to play the parts, not to be confused with the speculation posts I've been doing up to now.  I'll start each post with the character description (which may be recycled from a speculation post), and then we'll examine the actor who's been announced.  Let's take a look at some of the new players we'll meet in 2012:

--------

Margaery Tyrell
Art by Amok
Margaery is the only daughter of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden and the Reach. She is slightly younger than her brother Loras, the Knight of Flowers. The Tyrells are the second wealthiest family in Westeros, behind only the Lannisters.  As the only daughter, Margaery's access to that fortune will make her an enticing pawn as the game of thrones gains steam. Margaery is described as "doe-eyed and pretty with long, curly brown hair." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Natalie Dormer
Best known for her role as Anne Boleyn in Showtime's The Tudors, Natalie is originally from Reading, England. She just turned 29, which is definitely older than the 17yo Margaery of the books.  However, remember that many of the characters have been aged up for television.  Jon Snow is supposed to be 15 at the start of the novels, whereas on the show he seems to be at least 18.  That kind of aging doesn't get Margaery to 29, but I think it will be fine.  Natalie also played the role of Victoria in Casanova with Heath Ledger, and has a part in this summer's Captain America.

As for my pick, I had the right show, but the wrong actress.  I wanted to go with Sarah Bolger, who played Princess Mary on The Tudors.  She's a little closer to the correct age, and I felt like she would be a bit less recognizable from her previous role, but I'm still very happy with the actual hire.  Natalie did a good job playing one type of royal woman, and it will be interesting to get to see her try a different take in Westeros.

What do you think, can they pass for siblings?

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Qhorin Halfhand

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Qhorin Halfhand
Art by Amok
Qhorin is a member of the Night's Watch. He lives at the Shadow Tower, one of the other two operational Watch castles, and is the lead ranger of the Shadow Tower's contingent sent to join Commander Mormont's expedition beyond the Wall.  The name Halfhand comes from a previous ranging, where a wildling's axe severed all the fingers on his right hand, save his forefinger and thumb.  He is described as "tall and clean-shaven with a long braid. He has gray eyes." - (from Tower of the Hand)

James Purefoy
Purefoy has to be on GoT at some point.  He's British.  He's worked on HBO.  He's familiar to American audiences, but not a movie star.  He worked on British TV recently, but doesn't have anything lined up now that his most recent movie has finished filming.  You probably recognize him as Mark Anthony on Rome.  He also played the Black Prince in A Knight's Tale (with Mark Addy).  He was King Lot in the GoT-competitor Camelot's first season, and he recently finished shooting a major part in the forthcoming big-budget epic John Cater of Mars.  He's the right age to play Qhorin, and I think he can play a great cold-worn, courageous ranger of the Night's Watch.

--------

NEXT TIME:  I know I keep promising Xaro Xhoan Daxos, but I've been doing a re-read in preparation of A Dance With Dragons and I keep finding big characters that I forgot come into the picture in book 2.  Maybe we'll go with XXD next week.

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Jaqen H'ghar

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Jaqen H'ghar
Art by Amok
Jaqen is a convicted felon, and by the end of the first season of Game of Thrones he's already been turned over to Yoren to serve in the Night's Watch.  We just haven't met him yet. To recap, Yoren came to King's Landing at about the halfway point of the season and was the first to tell Ned Stark about his wife's capture of Tyrion Lannister. Yoren wasn't in town to deliver mail, he was there to get men for the Night's Watch, and Jaqen is one of his more...interesting acquisitions. He is originally from Lorath, one of the Free Cities, and is described as "slender and fine-featured. Half of his hair is red and the other half is white." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Michael Sheen
Michael Sheen is a 42 year old Welsh actor who has only recently entered the consciousness of American audiences.  His first major role was Lucian in Underworld (and its sequels). He then played Prime Minister Tony Blair in The Queen, and journalist David Frost in Frost/Nixon.  He entered the Twilight Saga as the vampire Aro in New Moon, voiced the White Rabbit in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and played Castor in Tron: Legacy.

While some will say that he's too big of a name to appear on TV, I'm not so sure. He has yet to have a starring movie role, so I don't think he's really a "movie star".  From looking at IMDB and Wikipedia, he doesn't seem to have any confirmed roles coming up.  Besides, shooting a season of an HBO show is pretty close to shooting a movie in terms of the time commitment, especially if you're not one of the handful of really central characters.  As for his ability to play Jaqen, readers of the book series should note the varied roles he has played in his relatively short term on screen.

--------

NEXT TIME:  In doing some research for these blog posts, I realized that I hadn't even thought about casting any of the new Night's Watch recruits for S2, so I had to give it a go.  Xaro Xhoan Daxos has, sadly, been bumped to next week.

Casting Game of Thrones - Season 2: Ygritte

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

And don't forget, Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage were the fan favorites to play Ned & Tyrion, so who knows, maybe I'll actually get one right along the way.

--------

Ygritte
Art by Amok
Ygritte is one of the first wildlings Jon Snow encounters in his travels north of The Wall.  The character is definitely a fan favorite, and she has one of the best-loved catchphrases from the books, "You know nothing, Jon Snow."  I don't want to get into much more character description to avoid major spoilers.  She is described as "short and bandy-legged with a round face, small hands, a pug nose, with shaggy bright red hair. Her teeth are crooked." - (from Tower of the Hand)

Lily Cole
Lily Cole started as a model, but moved into acting in 2007 with the film St. Trinian's.  In 2009 she played the female lead in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.  She recently appeared in an episode of Doctor Who, and has two films in post-production: There Be Dragons, set during the Spanish Civil War, and The Moth Diaries.  She's from England, so she shouldn't have a problem getting cast.  She just turned 23, so she's in the perfect range compared to the aging-up of the other young characters.  She's 5'10, which is definitely not "short", but I personally don't think Ygritte's height is a central character trait.  My bet is the biggest fan objection to this casting would be "she's too pretty".  First of all, I don't think the books ever say she's ugly.  She's just a wildling, so she doesn't brush her hair or wear make-up.  I feel like Lily has the kind of face that the GoT makeup artists could make virtually unrecognizable.  And can't you just see her saying "You know nothing Jon Snow" the second after this photo was snapped?

--------

NEXT TIME:  I keep thinking we're going to have real casting news, and I keep getting disappointed.  Right now, I've got a pretty good idea for Xaro Xhoan Daxos rumbling around in my brain, so I'll say that will be next week's post.

DC's September Shakeup So Far

Suggested Listening Music:
..and choose one:
If you are excited about the possible changes: Beck – The Golden Age
Or, if you are unhappy with the announcements: Beck - Lost Cause

What we know so far:
A few days ago, higher ups at DC Comics revealed that the DCU is in for some pretty major changes. The company's entire line of comics is going to be revamped at the end of August. More than 50 new and relaunched titles, brand new creative teams, new creative directions, some revamped origins, and a more diverse cast of characters are just a few of the changes that seem to be in store. Of course, that was only half of the announcement. DC also revealed that, starting with the release of the relaunched JLA #1, all of their books would be released simultaneously in stores and digitally.
Both of these revelations are big news. The fact that one of the big two comic book companies is making a major play for the digital market is a huge deal. Many observers, myself included, will be fascinated to see how things play out. However, as interesting as the day-and-date angle is, its implications wont be felt for several months.
In the meantime, DC is taking advantage of the spotlight brought on by their announcement to reveal some of the details of the company-wide relaunch-fest. Since there are more than 50 new books for them to reveal details on, expect more news very soon, but here is what they have confirmed so far:

Aquaman, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ivan Reis. Can the writer who has revamped two of DC's other Silver Age heroes restore Aquaman to his rightful place in the DC Pantheon?

Captain Atom, written by JT Krul and drawn by Freddie Williams II. Captain Atom is the inspiration for Dr. Manhattan in Alan Moore's comic book opus Watchmen. Can DC revive one of the original atomic powered heroes?

DC Universe Presents, written and drawn by various creators. An ongoing anthology that introduces (and reintroduces) characters to old and new readers alike makes a ton of sense in a revamped universe.

The Fury of Firestorm, written by Ethan Van Sciver and Gail Simone and drawn by Yildiray Cinar. Ethan Van Sciver is one of several artists to trade in his pencil for a...laptop? I'm assuming most writers use laptops these days. Well, regardless, he's best known as an artists, but now he is writing Firestorm alongside Secret Six's Simone.

The Flash, written and drawn by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato. Two artists sharing the load of both art and script. Surely, following the fanfare of Flashpoint, if the Green Lantern movie goes well, DC has to be eyeing the Flash as their next live-action property. Watch for DC to try and keep this book high profile.

Green Arrow, written by JT Krul and drawn by Dan Jurgens. Krul retains the writing duties on Green Arrow. Let's just hope Roy Harper stays hidden in the new DCU for a while.

Green Lantern Books:
DC seems to be determined to turn Green Lantern into a full fledged comic book franchise akin to Batman and Superman. I can't really blame them considering the upcoming movie and the momentum created by Geoff Johns epic run on the main title. To that end, they have announced four books that deal with the Green Lantern cast of characters.

Green Lantern, written by Geoff Johns and drawn Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy.
The announcement does not explicitly say that the Hal Jordan is the main character. Either this is something that can be assumed or it is a hint.
Green Lantern Corp, written by Peter J. Tomasi and drawn by Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna.
This is Guy Garderner and John Stewart's book.
Green Lantern: The New Guardians, by Tony Bedard, Tyler Kirkham and Batt.
Kyle Rayner and representatives from the other emotion based corps.
Red Lanterns, written by Peter Milligan and drawn by Ed Benes and Rob Hunter.
     Rampaging Red Lanterns, Atrocitus!

Hawkman, by Tony Daniel and Philip Tan. Tony Daniel is the third artist to be given writing duties, so far. Will a Hawkman finally survive a universe reboot without becoming incredibly confusing?

Justice League of America, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Jim Lee. No real surprise here. This has been whispered about for months. The real question is: With two of the three vice presidents working on the same book, will any editor dare give them constructive criticism?

Justice League International, written by Dan Jurgens and drawn by Aaron Lopresti. Dan Jurgens returns to the Justice League. Also, Booster Gold, Guy Gardener, and August General in Iron on the same team!?

Mr. Terrific, written by Eric Wallace and drawn by Roger Robinson. Michael Holt finally gets a much deserved solo series. Lets hope it does not make it onto Worst Comic Book of the Year lists like Wallace's last book.

Wonder Woman by Brian Azzerello and Cliff Chiang. I saved the most exciting for last (actually, it was a fortuitous occurrence of alphabetization). I'm not a huge fan of Azzerello, but I am pretty excited about this book. This creative team has real potential.

Trends (so far):
Lots of artists being tapped as writers. This is nothing new at DC, Tony Daniels has been writing Batman for a while now. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to see artists get a chance to stretch their creative legs, but I find the timing kind of interesting. DC has 52(!) new books to fill. While guys like Geoff Johns and a few others can handle multiple monthly writing duties, artists can only generally handle one book a month. So, I find it interesting that two of DC's most well known and consistent artists (Ethan Van Sciver and Tony Daniels) are not being tasked with drawing two of the relaunched titles. I guess, we are still waiting for announcements concerning the other 40-something new books. It is entirely possible that these artists are writing one book and drawing another. After all, we already know that Dan Jurgens is doing it!

Location Scouting Game of Thrones - Season 2: The Iron Islands

HBO's Game of Thrones premiered Sunday, April 17th to rave reviews and decent ratings. That combination was enough for the network to officially greenlight a second season. We'll be getting at least 10 more episodes in the spring of 2012, covering the events of the second book, A Clash of Kings.

If you've read the series, you know that means we'll be seeing a host of new locations, places that may have been mentioned in the first season, but we haven't visited yet. I don't live in Europe, so I can't find these places myself, but other fans do. In this series of posts I'll talk about places in Westeros we'll visit in Season 2, and try to highlight some of the real-life places they may use to bring them to life.

--------

The Iron Islands

The Iron Islands are a rocky outcropping of islands just northwest of the Riverlands, off the west coast of Westeros.  They're too harsh for much agriculture, so to survive you either fish, or you take other people's food.  The inhabitants of the Iron Islands, the ironborn, are largely descended from the First Men, and are the Westerosi equivalent of Vikings, with a little pirate thrown in for good measure.  It's cold, and windy, and the waves are always crashing in from every direction.

--------

Ballintoy

It looks like we might have our first new shooting location.  Yesterday, a story from the Balmoney Times began circulation among the fan community about Game of Thrones negotiating a deal to shoot some scenes near Ballintoy, in Northern Ireland.  There's a Harbour, so it could be the sight for Dragonstone, or somewhere in the Free Cities, but my money is on the Iron Islands.  Let me show you why.
from the Wyvernwood Flickr

First, there's this picture.  That just looks like the Iron Islands to me.  Obviously that outcropping isn't enough for a set, but I'm betting there are some bigger ones nearby.  Or, lacking that, they could just go digital.  Those rocks just have a great feel.

Next, we have the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
from the Stuart Yeates Flickr
If you've read the books, you know that the castle Pyke has several pieces on several different rocky outcroppings, and they're connected by swinging bridges.  Why build one of those when you can find one pre-built?

Then we have Dunseverick Castle

Obviously more of a ruin than an actual castle these days, this is still a gorgeous location, and could make for some really iconic shots with a bit of digital trickery.

Finally, there's the Giant's Causeway

This is apparently one of the top tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, so I'm sure it's a very familiar sight to many Europeans.  For those of us across the pond, it's an awesome alien landscape.  If the crew is already going to be in nearby Ballintoy, it would be a shame to not put this great visual to use somehow in our show.

I could be completely off, and you have to remember that the story only specifically mentions the use of the Harbour, but once I did a little research I felt like there was a treasure trove of great locations in the vicinity.
